SANTA CLARA.- A giant march led by Santa Clara youth, yesterday June 14, evoked Comandante Ernesto Che Guevara and General Antonio Maceo on the anniversary of their births.

Hundreds of students and young workers, from Marta Abreu Central University of Las Villas, headed the demonstration wearing replicas of Che's beret, a symbol of struggle in the province. The march concluded at the Memorial Sculpture Complex, where a group of elementary school children received their red kerchiefs from their parents, becoming pioneros, while other youth were presented with their Young Communists League membership cards.

Jerónimo de Souza, secretary general of the Communist Party of Portugal, leading a delegation from that country, attended the event and paid a special tribute to Che.

Before the niche where the heroic guerilla's remain lie, De Souza, accompanied by Julio Lima Corzo, first secretary of the Party in the province, placed a floral wreath and observed a moment of silence as a sign of respect for Comandante Ernesto Che Guevara and his comrades who died in Bolivia.

Later in a statement to the press, De Sousa said he considers Che a source of inspiration to continue the struggle for justice around the world, adding that he is more alive than ever, and that if he were present, Che would be pleased to see that the Cuban Revolution is doing well. He would be ready to do battle in any dark corner of the planet, which demands great solidarity among the world's revolutionary forces, just as he taught us, the visitor said.
