The second chariot of King Tutankhamun has joined the collection of the golden pharaoh at the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) in preparation for its soft opening in mid 2018.

Gem supervisor-general Tarek Tawfik told Ahram online that the transportation of the chariot from the Egyptian Museum is part of the ministry’s celebration of the anniversary of the 6 October War, as the chariot is decorated with war scenes.

Tawfiq said that the transportation was carried out according to a plan drawn in collaboration with the administration of the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir, where the the gold and gilded artefacts of the boy king are to be transported a few days before the soft opening of the GEM.

The chariot is the second of four Tutankhamun chariots to be transported, according to Eissa Zidan, head of the first aid restoration department at the GEM.

Zidan says the chariot was transported in four wooden boxes after being packed with special materials that protect against acidity.

He explains that the chariot includes 12 pieces including a gilded falcon of the god Horus wearing the sun disk and a unique scene depicting the god Bess.

The chariot is the ninth object to be transported from Tutankhamun’s collection as part of the Japanese-Egyptian project to transport 73 items from the boy king’s collection with the support of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
